Overview of Battery Storage and Backup Power Systems

Battery storage, is the use of batteries to store energy.

Battery storage, also known as battery charging, refers to the process of bringing electricity from the output of a power source (such as a charger or mobile power supply) to a usable state after a series of charging processes (such as rechargeable batteries).
Battery storage is a special form of energy conversion and storage that can be used for energy storage, power backup, DC power, batteries, and backup power.

Overview of Battery Storage and Backup Power Systems

Battery energy storage

Energy storage technology can be divided into two categories: physical energy storage and chemical energy storage, of which physical energy storage is mainly the use of energy conversion equipment, electrical energy into mechanical or chemical energy storage. For example, pumped storage, compressed air energy storage, liquid flow battery energy storage. Chemical energy storage is the use of chemical storage technology to realize the storage and release of electrical energy, including lithium-ion batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries, zinc-manganese batteries, lead-acid batteries and so on.
Battery storage has a wide range of applications, including both civil and commercial fields. The civilian field mainly refers to the battery storage for household and industrial use; the commercial field mainly refers to the power supply in the fields of power generation, power supply, power distribution, railroad traction, automobile and so on. Battery storage in the power system mainly plays the role of peak shaving and valley filling, can effectively reduce the peak and valley difference of the power system, improve the efficiency of the power system.

Battery power reserve
Standby power, is a power source that is pre-configured for use at a particular time or occasion. In operation, in order to maintain the power of the standby power supply, it is often realized by changing the battery voltage. When the system fails or the system does not work properly, the backup power supply will be able to provide the user with the required power in time.
There are many kinds of battery backup power, commonly used rechargeable batteries and lead-acid batteries. Both of these batteries are primary batteries.

DC power supply

A DC power supply is a device that converts alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC). It does this by rectifying the alternating current into direct current and loading the load under the direct current current, which then feeds the power back into the grid. DC power supply can be divided into two categories: one is AC power supply with fixed frequency, which consists of a transducer (such as a transistor or rectifier bridge), capacitor and inductor; the other is AC power supply with variable frequency over time, which consists of a transducer (such as a thyristor or crystal oscillator) and an inductor.

Storage Battery

Storage battery is a kind of chemical power source that uses lead, mercury and other heavy metals as the main raw material, and electrolyte as the medium, which converts the electric energy into chemical energy and stores it under a certain temperature.
Generally in electrical equipment to play the role of backup power, but also as an energy storage device. The working principle of the battery is: in the charging process, the lead sulfate on the negative electrode is oxidized to lead sulfate and water, and the lead sulfate on the positive electrode is reduced to lead oxide; in the discharging process, the lead oxide on the positive electrode is reduced to lead sulfate, and the lead oxide on the negative electrode is reduced to silver oxide. When the battery is in charging state, the reaction occurs on the electrodes.

Backup power supply

Backup power supply (Backpack), also known as emergency power supply, backup generator, backup battery, is an uninterrupted power supply device set up to meet the power supply requirements of the grid under normal power supply conditions.
When the utility power interruption, you can start the emergency generator set to provide continuous uninterrupted power supply. Its purpose is to provide emergency power supply in case of power system failure or accident, to ensure that users have a backup power supply can be used in the event of a power outage.
Backup power generally has two kinds of DC power supply and AC power supply. Due to the need for uninterrupted power supply of DC power supply, the output of backup power supply is generally DC power supply.

Because of its small output power, its output generally does not exceed 5% of the rated power; because of its large capacity, it is generally used in a single or modular structure, and double float charging, single float charging and other ways to provide backup power supply for the system.
